Tara is a range of pine mountains in western Serbia, the canyons of the Drina river and one of the most postcard-worthy viewpoints in the country, Banjska Stena. If it's your first time in Serbia's mountains — start here.

What to see

  • Banjska Stena — a viewpoint high above the Drina canyon.
  • Lake Zaovine — turquoise mountain water, great for a picnic.
  • The House on the Drina — a tiny house on a rock in the middle of the river, a symbol of the region.

How to get there

About 3 hours by car from Belgrade via Užice. Public transport is harder: a bus to Bajina Bašta, then a taxi. Renting a car is the easiest option.

⏱️ Tip: budget at least a day, better an overnight — it's most beautiful at dawn, when the canyon is wrapped in fog.

Where to stay

Around Mitrovac and Kaluđerske Bare there are guesthouses and eco-hotels right inside the park. Book ahead in summer and on holidays.
